Beethovenfest Bonn is striving for a structural change towards a more sustainable economy and festival organisation. In 2023, we initiated a process to evaluate climate-damaging emissions in our operations. The Öko Institut e. V. is supporting us in this endeavour as part of the Culture4Climate initiative.
CO₂-Compensation
Climate partnership with Knauber ProKlima
For years, our partner Knauber has supported us in offsetting the CO₂ emissions released by our print and online media. The festival artists’ travel to and from the festival is also offset.
In 2023, Knauber ProKlima supported the Cambodia Water Purifier climate protection project as part of our climate partnership. Ceramic filter systems for purifying drinking water are installed in Cambodian households. This eliminates the need to boil unclean drinking water in rural regions and reduces fuel consumption. The commitment is certified with the WWF »Gold Standard« and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals on health, water protection and hygiene, working conditions, climate and species protection.
First CO₂ footprint evaluation
In 2023, Beethovenfest began a process to internally evaluate its greenhouse gas footprint. As a first step, we worked with experts from the Öko Institut e. V. to calculate the emissions from the final concert of the 2022 festival with the London Aurora Orchestra. The results of the evaluation served as the basis for our panel discussion at the end of the 2023 festival at the Kreuzkirche festival centre.
