On the trail of democracy and subculture in Bonn
Together with the Beethovenfest’s communications department, Inside Artist Tobias Zielony is following in the footsteps of democracy in Bonn in keeping with this year’s festival motto. He is pursuing an interdisciplinary research project in the course of which he is listening to audio sources, visiting museums, tracking down places and buildings of democracy and talking to people in Bonn who have helped shape the subculture. The project has not yet been finalised, but is pursuing different ideas and types of sources. Tobias Zielony is consciously and intensively engaging with Beethovenfest with this year’s motto »Together« and the aspects of democracy and participation and is trying to find a symbiosis between his photographic work and the music festival.

Vita Tobias Zielony
Tobias Zielony (*1973 in Wuppertal) is an artist, photographer and filmmaker. He lives and works in Berlin. He became known for his photographic depictions of young people living on the margins of affluent society. For the past 20 years, Zielony has focussed on milieus that have been failed by the promises of modern progress and are building a temporary life in their own cultural niches. His numerous institutional exhibitions include the German Pavilion in Venice in 2015 and a retrospective at Museum Folkwang in 2021. He has been Professor of Photography at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts since 2022.
Vita Cana Bilir-Meier
Cana Bilir-Meier studierte an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien Kunstpädagogik und bildende Kunst, sowie an der Schule für unabhängigen Film Friedl Kubelka in Wien und an der Sabancı-Universität in Istanbul. 2019 erhielt sie den Bayerischen Kunstförderpreis für Kunst im öffentlichen Raum, 2018 war sie Preisträgerin des ars viva Preises vom Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft. 2016 wurde sie mit dem Birgit-Jürgenssen Preis ausgezeichnet.
Sie arbeitet als Künstlerin, Filmemacherin, Autorin und in kulturpädagogischen Projekten. Ihr methodisches Vorgehen beinhaltet immer wieder eine kritische Beschäftigung mit Rassismus und Migration, wie auch mit (institutionalisierter) Gewalt. Dies manifestiert sich in Zeichnungen, Performances, in audiovisuellen Medien und im Film. Mitunter greift sie handelnd in den öffentlichen Raum ein.
Cana Bilir-Meier reflektiert in ihren Arbeiten die soziale und kulturelle, aber auch strukturelle Teilhabe aller in unserer Gesellschaft. Ihre Zeichnungen, Film- und Soundarbeiten bilden ein essayistisches Nachdenken, das die Konstruktion von Identitäten, Gesellschaft, Erinnerungen und Geschichten befragt und dabei öffentliches Archivmaterial mit privaten Dokumenten und gelebten Erinnerungen verbindet. Bilir-Meier geht es um das Erzählen als Mittel des Öffentlich-Machens zwischen ihrem biografischen Kontext (als Postmigrantin) und den großen gesellschaftlichen Narrativen.
