The baritone Tobias Berndt has made a name for himself internationally, particularly as a lieder and concert singer.
His collaborations with conductors such as Hans Christoph Rademann, Philippe Herreweghe, Helmuth Rilling, Sir Simon Rattle, Herbert Blomstedt and Teodor Currentzis have taken him to leading orchestras across Europe. His extensive concert repertoire ranges from Monteverdi through the great oratorios of Handel, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Britten to world premieres by contemporary composers such as Jörg Widmann.
In numerous opera engagements, he has appeared on stage as Wolfram in Wagner’s Tannhäuser, as Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, and as Argante in Handel’s Rinaldo, amongst others.
Tobias Berndt has also earned an outstanding reputation as a lieder singer. He is the winner of the Das Lied – International Song Competition in Berlin and the Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, Austria. He has given recitals at the Heidelberger Frühling, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the Vienna Musikverein and the Lucerne Festival, as well as in Japan, South Africa, the Netherlands and Russia.
The versatile singer began his musical training in the Dresden Kreuzchor and studied with Hermann Christian Polster in Leipzig and Rudolf Piernay in Mannheim. His teachers also included Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Thomas Quasthoff.
