With his engaging naturalness, countertenor Benno Schachtner ranks among the leading singers in his field on concert stages and opera houses worldwide. He is a singer with a grounded, masculine yet weightless timbre and is regarded as an emotionally profound interpreter of repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to modern music. It is above all his spontaneity, his joy in what arises in the music in the moment and cannot be planned, that makes the countertenor so captivating. With brilliant technique, a flair for interpretative subtleties and great passion, he captivates his audience time and time again.
Benno Schachtner was shaped by his teachers Prof. G. Weinberger (Church Music course, 2004–2009) at the Detmold University of Music and Prof. Ulrich Messthaler (Vocal Studies course, 2010–2012) at the Schola Cantorum in Basel.
In 2020, he was appointed Professor of Historical Singing at the University of the Arts Bremen, where he has since led an international singing class within the Historical Performance Practice programme. His particular focus in teaching music is on honesty of interpretation, musical flexibility and a rich variety of expression. He draws inspiration from nature and his other great passion, agriculture. In his home town of Dietenheim, he runs a part-time farm.
Benno Schachtner is the founder and artistic director of the Diademus Festival in his home region, as well as the artistic director of the Diademus vocalists, the Diademus concertists and the Diademus choir academy.
