»Here are three musicians playing as one, three people with very different characters who bring their programme to life with intelligence and originality.«
Founded in 2010, Trio Gaspard is one of the most sought-after piano trios of its generation, praised for its unique and fresh approach to music. The trio regularly performs at major international venues including London’s Wigmore Hall, Berlin’s Philharmonie and Pierre Boulez Saal, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, Lucerne’s KKL and Shanghai’s Symphony Hall.
Highlights of the 2024/25 season include debuts at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Sydney Opera House, a Scandinavian tour and the release of the fourth volume of the complete recording of Haydn’s Trios.
As well as exploring the traditional piano trio repertoire, Trio Gaspard regularly collaborates with contemporary composers and seeks to discover rarely performed masterpieces. In 2022, the Trio performed Ethel Smyth’s Piano Trio in D Minor live at the BBC Proms. The Trio also performed the rarely performed work »Présence – ballet blanc« for piano trio and narrator by Bernd Alois Zimmermann in collaboration with contemporary dancer Luka Fritsch.
The musicians are currently working on a complete recording of all 46 piano trios by Joseph Haydn, supplemented by Haydn-related contemporary works for which the trio has commissioned works from Olli Mustonen, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Helena Winkelmann, Sally Beamish and Kit Armstrong, among others. The first three recordings in the series have already been released and have received critical acclaim. »Berlin Storie«' is the first recording in a new series dedicated to European metropolises.
The members of Trio Gaspards come from Germany, Greece and the UK. They have worked regularly with Hatto Beyerle, co-founder of the Alban Berg Quartet. The ensemble also studied at the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA).
The Trio has won several special prizes and first prizes, including the International Joseph Joachim Chamber Music Competition in Weimar, the 5th International Haydn Competition in Vienna and the 17th International Chamber Music Competition in Illzach, France. The trio has also been awarded a Fellowship of Chamber Music at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester between 2017 and 2019.
