The common roots go back to a time when emotions were allowed to flow freely. The bond is deep, the joy boundless, the inner strength grows wrapped in tenderness. »Sjaella« is the »soul« (Swedish: »själ«) of the women who share the stage and have not lost their childhood experiences. In 2005, a journey of discovery began that has since taken the artists all over the world.
For years, Sjaella has had a firm place in the vocal music scene, performing at renowned festivals – Early Music Festival Utrecht, Rheingau Music Festival, Schleswig Holstein Music Festival – and winning first prizes at numerous competitions, such as the 2015 Tampereen Sävel Festival in Finland. Recent tours have taken the ensemble to Australia, Mexico, Jordan, Azerbaijan, Hungary, South Africa and the USA, as well as to renowned concert halls such as the Mozarteum Salzburg, the Vienna Musikverein and the Flagey Brussels. In July 2025 Sjaella will sing at the Sydney Opera House as part of another Australian tour.
Sjaella’s repertoire draws its versatility from an under-represented vocal line-up in the music world. The five female singers combine contemporary works with Early Music, explore folk tunes from different cultures and are also drawn to jazz. The album »Preisung« as well as »Meridiane NORD« and »Origins« received a nomination for the German Record Critics’ Award and »Meridiane NORD« won the CARA Award for Best Folk/World Album in the USA.
Sjaella was an integral part of the ballet production »Giselle« at the Leipzig Opera in the 2023/24 season and worked closely with the Gewandhaus Orchestra. At the beginning of 2025, the chamber opera »Primero Sueño«, composed especially for Sjaella, premiered in New York City at the MET Cloisters.
