The documentary about Campus Project 2019: South Africa
Sjaella and Just 6, two a cappella groups from totally different music cultures, are singing together for the first time; the result is an incomparable concert and new friendships across borders! Sjaella is a German vocal ensemble from Leipzig. The six young women's repertoire contains a wide range of traditional European songs. The South African vocal band Just 6 – made up of just six male voices without instruments – comes from Johannesburg. They call their fresh style »afro vocal play«.
Sjaella and Just 6 meet at the Campus Project of Beethovenfest. Together with Deutsche Welle, the Beethovenfest's Campus Project has been bringing young musicians from around the world together since 2001. In 2019, the music workshop is taking place in South Africa. In this multi-cultural nation, group singing is a popular way of making music and forms part of the country's identity. During the apartheid era, choral music became a means of protest against discrimination and oppression. African vocal music meets traditional European song. The highlight is a joint concert at Beethovenfest in Bonn, accompanied by the German National Youth Orchestra – a concert as colorful and multifaceted as life itself in the Rainbow Nation.
