The Poppelsdorf high-rise bunker was built during the Second World War as an air-raid shelter and provided protection for hundreds of people at the time. After the war, the bunker lost its original function and served as a student residence for many years. The three-storey bunker covers a total area of 850 square metres and once had 105 reclining seats and 724 seats. As the bunker's shelter, with concrete walls up to 4.50 metres thick and concrete ceilings 1.40 metres thick, rises visibly above the ground, it is classified as a high-rise bunker.

After the student residence was dissolved, the Poppelsdorf bunker stood empty for a long time. On the initiative of the Dr. Hans Riegel Foundation, the high-rise bunker was reopened as an art and cultural space for students. From May 2025, students from the Art History Institute at the University of Bonn took over the educational work and guide visitors through the exhibition.
