The origins of the Old Cemetery date back to 1715, when the Electors of Cologne resided and ruled in Bonn. They established the burial ground outside the city gates, initially for poor people and strangers, before it became the only cemetery for all (Christian) citizens of the city in 1787. The graves in this historic cemetery reflect Bonn's cultural and intellectual history, mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries. There are numerous graves of important personalities, e.g. the graves of Clara and Robert Schumann, Beethoven's mother, Mildred Scheel, Norbert Blüm and many scholars from the early days of the University of Bonn. With its excellent acoustics, St. George's Chapel provides an atmospheric setting for concerts.
