Composer and pianist Shuteen Erdenebaatar was born in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar. After studying classical music in Mongolia, her love of jazz led her to Germany, which proved to be a key moment for her. Here she was able to find and cultivate her own voice. This voice is now unmistakable, and her classical foundation is evident throughout, in the technical brilliance, stylistic finesse and thematic structure of her compositions.
Following her debut album »Rising Sun«, released in September 2002 on the prestigious New York label Motéma Music, she was quickly recognised and celebrated as one of the most promising rising stars on the European jazz scene. This album with her quartet caused a furore in the press and among the public. Shuteen Erdenebaatar has toured Europe, China and Mongolia. She has been invited to perform at renowned festivals such as North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazzahead!, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Jazz Baltica, Transition Festival, Reykjavik Jazz Festival and Rockit Festival.
In 2024 Shuteen Erdenebaatar won the prestigious German Jazz Award, the Creative Music Award and Mongolia’s highest cultural award, the Mungun Mod. She also won first prizes at the BMW Young Artist Jazz Award, the legendary Young Munich Jazz Award and the Kurt Maas Jazz Award. She received a music scholarship from the city of Munich and the composition prize at the Biberacher Jazz Prize.
She currently conducts and writes for three of her own ensembles: her energetic yet sensitive Quartet, her exquisite Duo for piano and contra-alto clarinet, and her unique 20-piece cross-genre Chamber Jazz Orchestra. A new studio album with her duo will be released in autumn 2025.
