Julio Ernesto Escobar Mellado is a light artist, lighting designer and performing arts technician from Patagonia, currently living and working in Wuppertal.
He studied art with a focus on theatre performance at Arcis University in Santiago de Chile, and went on to earn degrees in semiotics and architectural lighting from the University of Chile and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, also in Santiago.
As a light artist, he creates installations and interventions primarily dedicated to the theme of memory in locations such as Patagonia, the Atacama Desert, Valparaíso, and memorial sites throughout Chile. As a lighting designer, he has worked with various theatre, dance, music and circus groups, as well as prominent artists in Chile and beyond. He is also a technician, technical director and producer for collectives, festivals and artistic-social projects, including the Fabrica Europa Festival (Florence, 2012), the Cielos del Infinito Festival (Magallanes, since 2007) and the Patagonia en Escena Festival (Coyhaique, since 2012).
