Jacob Lawrence’s musical career began at the age of five in his father’s choir in Melbourne, Australia. After studying at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, he moved to Basel to study with Gerd Türk at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Since then, Jacob Lawrence has established himself as one of Europe’s most sought-after and versatile Early Music performers.
On the opera stage he has sung the title role in Monteverdi’s »Orfeo« (Schwetzinger Schlosstheater, Arts et Lettres Vevey), Aeneas in Graupner’s »Dido« (Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik), Emilio in Handel’s »Partenope« (Les Arts Florissants), Ubaldo in Haydn’s »Armida« (Pinchgut Opera) and the Sailor in Purcell’s »Dido and Aeneas« (Les Arts Florissants).
He regularly performs with Europe’s leading Early Music ensembles, including Ensemble Correspondances, Vox Luminis, Profeti della Quinta, La Fonte Musica, Ensemble Continuum Berlin, Le Miroir de Musique and La Cetra Basel.
Jacob is particularly passionate about researching the historical performance practice of the 16th and 17th centuries. In 2020 he won the Schloss-Weissenbrunn competition for historical improvisation, and in 2024 he created a new edition of Allegri’s »Miserere« for Pinchgut Opera, incorporating elements of Renaissance ornamentation and improvisation. He also plays the violin and accompanies his singing on the lira da braccio.
