Fabian Arends, from the Netherlands, studied jazz percussion at the Cologne University of Music. He works as a percussionist, composer, electronic music producer and teacher of percussion, ensemble and improvisation at the Stuttgart University of Music. Long-lasting musical relationships are very important to him. This is reflected in the bands he has formed. In 2015, he founded the Danish-German band Fosterchild, with whom he has performed at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and the Cologne Jazz Week, among others, and recorded two albums. In 2022, Fabian Arends founded a new project called Fractures and released its first record in March 2022 on Klaeng Records. This ensemble serves as a working laboratory for various improvisation concepts and compositions.
Fabian Arends is a member of other groups that work intensively as musical collectives, such as the Shannon Barnett Quartet, Fabian Dudek Quartet, Reza Askari Roar, Philip Brämswig Trio, Thomas Rückert Trio and the Jason Seizer Quartet.
In 2016, Arends released his first album as bandleader and composer, entitled Levitate (klaeng records), which was nominated for the Echo Jazz Award in the Newcomer of the Year category.
Fabian Arends has performed at numerous international jazz festivals, including the Jazzfest Berlin, the Melbourne Jazz Festival, the Sydney Jazz Festival, the Copenhagen Jazzfest, JazzBaltica and others. He has received various awards, including the Munich Jazz Prize (2014).
In addition to his work on the drums, Arends has been intensively involved in the production of electronic music in recent years, using a setup consisting of modular synthesizers and his laptop. In 2024, he released his latest electronic work, Expo Dreams.
