Nils C. Kumkar is a sociologist and a research associate at the SOCIUM Research Centre for Society and Inequality at the University of Bremen. His research focuses on social inequality, the political public sphere, protest, criticism, and the social debate surrounding ›truth‹. He studied sociology and economics in Göttingen and Los Angeles, completing his doctorate at the University of Leipzig in 2016 with a thesis on crisis protests in the USA and Germany. In 2025, he was a fellow at the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles, investigating the conspiracy theories surrounding Donald Trump’s inauguration. He is a sought-after contact for television and radio broadcasters on current political conflicts and writes for the features section of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Der Spiegel and Die Zeit, among others. In 2022, Suhrkamp Verlag published his highly acclaimed book »Alternative Fakten: Zur Praxis der kommunikativen Erkenntnisverweigerung« (»Alternative facts: on the practice of communicative denial of knowledge«); this was followed this year by »Polarisation: Die Ordnung der Politik« (»Polarisation: the order of politics«).
