Born in Salzburg to a South Korean composer and a singer, music was in Byol Kang’s blood from the very start. After moving to the Rhineland, she began playing the violin at the age of eight. Just four years later, she made her debut at the Berlin Philharmonie with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and has since maintained a busy concert schedule both at home and abroad.
She has already performed as a guest artist in major concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Glocke in Bremen and the Meistersingerhalle in Nuremberg.
In 2009, Byol Kang was the only soloist to win the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb (German Music Competition). This was followed by prizes and special awards at international violin competitions such as the Henri Marteau, Lipizer, Varallo Sesia and Max Rostal competitions. She has also been honoured by the London-based Borletti-Buitoni Trust and the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben (German Music Foundation).
As a soloist, she has performed with, among others, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra.
Byol Kang is particularly devoted to chamber music. Engagements in various ensembles have taken her to the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Verbier Festival, the PODIUM Festival Esslingen and the Spannungen Chamber Music Festival in Heimbach, where several live recordings of her concerts were also made.
In January 2015, her second CD, Romantic Impressions, was released on the GENUIN label, featuring pianist Boris Kusnezow and works by Johannes Brahms, Clara Schumann and Edvard Grieg.
Since the 2016/17 season, Byol Kang has been concertmaster of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin.
After studying in Rostock and Düsseldorf, she completed her concert exam in 2013 at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin under Prof. Antje Weithaas. She has been teaching her own class there since 2022.
