Arnulf Ballhorn has been a bassist in the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin for over 25 years. He studied double bass under Prof. Rainer Zepperitz in Berlin.
It is difficult for him to narrow down his musical preferences. In addition to his work in the orchestra, contemporary music and classical chamber music, jazz and tango as well as intensive work with the electric bass are among his fundamental musical interests.
He drew inspiration from lessons with bassists such as Miroslav Vitous, Gary Willis, and Jonas Hellborg. Also the Glorvigen Trio, his collaboration with actress and singer Dagmar Manzel, and various projects with vibraphonist Oli Bott also present him with ever-changing challenges. He performs regularly at international festivals featuring a wide range of musical genres and also runs his own label and studio.
In the orchestra, his commitment goes far beyond his ›normal‹ duties. As part of the Selam Opera! Team – and particularly in the development of the Operndolmuş concept – Arnulf Ballhorn has been able to contribute his ideas and experience. For some of the Komische Oper Berlin’s extraordinary festivals in recent years (including the two tango festivals and the Schall und Rausch festival), he has played a key role in shaping various programme elements.
