Moritz Baumgärtner studied drums at the Jazz Institute Berlin from 2006 to 2012. Within a very short time, he played his way into the international league with his very personal sound aesthetic and his unconventional style. Winner of numerous awards, including a Jazz-ECHO in 2012 and 2018 with his Lisbeth Quartet, he tours worldwide, both as (co-)leader (e.g. Melt Trio, TAU 5, Christian Weidner Trio) and as sideman (e.g. with Johanna Borchert Band, Richard Koch Quartet, Kalle Kalima/ UIi Kempendorff Trio). In addition to improvised music, he also drums in various rock bands, including Bonaparte, Max Punktezahl and since 2015 Frittenbude.
He also works with internationally renowned musicians such as Tony Malaby, Bob Stewart and Achim Kaufmann, and has played at jazz festivals such as the Jazzfest Berlin and rock festivals such as Rock am Ring, Fusion Festival, Southside and many more.
In addition, Baumgärtner has toured worldwide, can be heard on over 60 CD productions and is also active as a teacher; in addition to workshops and master classes, he has been a lecturer in Dresden since 2019 and professor for jazz drums in Nuremberg since 2022.
