Born in Graz, Richard Galler studied with Johann Benesch at the conservatory of Graz and with Milan Turkovic at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. During his studies he already received different awards at national and international competitions. Since 1987, Richard Galler is principal bassoonist with the Vienna Symphony and since 2004 he is a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
A marked preference of his is chamber music. He has worked with artists such as Christian Altenburger, Ernst Kovacic, Rainer Honeck, Franz Bartholomey, Patrick Demenga, Marie Luise Neunecker, Gerald Pachinger, Milan Turkovic or Radovan Vlatkovic. He has appeared at different chamber music festivals, among them the Lockenhaus, St. Gallen, Pablo Casals Festivalin Prade, Risör in Norway and Uusikaipunki in Finland. As of 2010 he is the successor of Milan Turkovic at the Bläserquintett Ensemble Wien-Berlin.
As a soloist Richard Galler has performed with conductors including Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Georges Pretre, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Vladimir Fedosejev and Leopold Hager. Multiple radio recordings and productions prove his versatility as a soloist and as a chamber musician.
Richard Galler regularly gives master classes, for example at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum, the Hamamatsu Wind Instrument Academy, the Gustav Mahler Academy in Bozen and the Internationale Sommerakademie Prag-Wien-Budapest. From 1994 to 1997 he was a visiting professor, from 1997 to 2004 an ordinary university professor of the bassoon at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. As of 2004, Richard Galler teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna as the successor of Milan Turkovic.
