Mark Daniel Hirsch

Mark Daniel Hirsch studied ancient Greek at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. He moved to Italy immediately after graduating.

During his 12-year employment as assistant director and stage manager at La Scala in Milan he worked with Giorgio Strehler, Jean-Pierre Ponelle, Patrick Chereau and Robert Wilson. During this time he was also involved with the Rossini Festival in Pesaro and the festival in Aix-en-Provence.

From 1990 he was working as director in Bremen, where he oversaw, among other things, the world premieres of Detlev Glanert’s ‘Drei Wasserspiele’ (mentioned in Opernwelt as best world premiere 1994/95).

Since 1997/98 he has been working at the Theater Bonn. He directed the children’s operas ‘Pollicino’, ‘Die drei Rätsel’, ‘Apollo et Hyacinthus’, ‘Cinderella’, the world premiere of ‘Prinzessin Süssusan’ by Sandeep Bhagwati, ‘Der Felsenjunge’, and ‘The Black Spider’ by Judith Weir. In 2006 his production of Mozart’s first opera ‘Apollo et Hyacinthus’, was cited as best direction at the critics’ survey for NRW. In addition Mark Hirsch put on ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ and ‘Rusalka’ at the opera of the Theater Bonn. In the critics’ surveys of 2011 Rusalka was cited in the ‘best’ lists in several categories (best conductor, best singer – male, best young singer, best stage set).

Under the management of Dr Bernhard Helmich he directed further operas: ‘Dido and Aeneas’, ‘Madame Butterfly’, ‘Gianni Schicchi’ and ‘Il Tabarro’. Finally, he has also overseen several re-recordings.
