Gerrit Prießnitz

A native of Bonn, Gerrit Priessnitz is a regular guest conductor at the Vienna Volksoper and a number of European orchestras and opera companies. In 2018/19 he was Principal Guest Conductor at Theatre Chemnitz, made his debut in Spain with the Orquesta de Córdoba, returned to the Staatskapelle Halle and Opera Cologne. Hector Berlioz' ‘Romét et Juliette’ under his direction received the Austrian Music Theatre Award 2018 as ‘Best Ballet production’. 2019/20 marks his debuts at the prestigious Beethovenfest Bonn and with the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester.

He has been closely associated with the Vienna Volksoper since 2006, where he has most notably conducted Mozart, Puccini and R. Strauss, in addition to many other operas and several operettas. Until 2011, he was also the artistic director of the Vienna Academic Philharmonic (WAPH) with regular concerts in the Musikverein and Konzerthaus.

Guest appearances abroad have brought him several times to Japan, as well as to the Bruckner Orchester and Landestheater Linz, Graz, Lucerne, Maribor, Bologna, and Bari. Priessnitz has also appeared with renowned German orchestras and opera houses. In 2013, he conducted the premiere of Hans Werner Henze's ‘Pollicino’ at the Vienna State Opera. This was followed by a re-invitation to conduct ‘The Nutcracker’ and Richard Strauss' ‘Josephslegende’. At the Cologne Opera, he has led productions of ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’, ‘Die Csárdásfürstin’, ‘Rigoletto’, ‘Die Fledermaus’ and ‘The Turn of the Screw’ and the world premiere of ‘Je suis Jacques’ for the Offenbach Year 2019.

With a concert performance of Beethoven's ‘Fidelio’ in 2014, he made his debut conducting the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; with the premiere of Offenbach's ‘La Belle Hélène’, he made his enthusiastically acclaimed debut at the Hamburg State Opera, where he later conducted ‘Carmen’ at short notice.

After his studies at the Salzburg Mozarteum University with Dennis Russell Davies, Jorge Rotter and Karl Kamper, which he completed with distinction and top marks, he was Kapellmeister and Director of Studies at the Theater Erfurt from 2001 to 2005.

2017 Gerrit Priessnitz joined the Opera and Conducting faculty of the Music and Arts University MUK of the city of Vienna.
