Christina Bakanic, an Austrian accordionist and composer, has made a name for himself as a jazz musician in Austria as well as internationally. His musical approach and experience blend in a subtle way with his compositions and combine the complex spontaneity of jazz, the spirited passion of tango nuevo, the disciplined momentum of classical music with the multilayered traditions of folk music.
Christian Bakanic, born 1980 in southern Burgenland, had his first instrumental lessons at the age of seven years in Jennersdorf. Since 1994 he resides in Graz, where he studies folk music at the Johann Joseph Fux conservatory and received his diploma to become a teacher for folk music instruments. Following this, he continued his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with Janne Rättyä, James Crabb and Geir Draugsvoll.
He has received several awards at harmonica competitions such as the Steirischer Harmonikawettbewerb Grazer Messe or the Österreichischer Wettbewerb Tag der Harmonika. He was the laureate at the Landeswettbewerb Prima la Musica (1997 and 1999) for classical accordion. In the last years, he has performed several concerts as a soloist but also in ensembles such as Folksmilch, Beefolk, Trio Infernal, Mala Junta, Marie Spaemann and Christian Bakanic, Temmel & Bakanic, Kahiba, Marina & the Kats, Scurdia, Rusanda Panfili & friends, Plattform K&K Vienna. Furthermore, he has toured through Europe, Japan, Argentine, China and Iceland, among others.
Christian Bakanic has worked and cooperated with various artists from different genres, among them artists such as Wolfgang Muthspiel, Heinrich von Kalnein, Klaus Johns, Miguel Herz-Kestranek, Josef Pichler, Alex Deutsch, Markus Schirmer, Gwylim Simcock, Wolfgang Puschnig, Jon Sass and Wolfram Berger. For a few years now, Christian Bakanic has been active as a composer. He received a commission for the Grabenfest der ÖBV 2006 as well as several composition mandates for theater music such as ‘Bully me’, ‘Ein Schaf fürs Leben’, ‘Mein Hundemund’ and ‘Das abgebrochene Drama’. His compositions move within the threshold of jazz, folk and contemporary music.
