Chor und Extrachor des Theater Bonn

The choir of the Theater Bonn celebrated its 75th anniversary in the season of 2010/2011. Its history as an integral element of the Bonn cultural life began in 1935, when artistic director Curt Herwig completed the newly established opera division with its own opera choir. After the war, the ensemble was reconstituted by capellmeister Theodor Sheer, who as a choir director shaped the artistic development of the choir until 1978. Following him was Georg-Archim Földes, in 1992 Markus Oppeneiger took over the post as choir director. From 1997 to 2013 Sibylle Wagner conducted the opera choir, following her until 2015 was Volkmar Olbrich, longterm conductor of the Leipzig and Frankfurt operas. Since the season of 2015/16, Marco Medved rehearses with the choir as the new conductor, who contributes to nearly one hundred performances in almost seven new productions.

Artistic highlights in the history of the choir are, next to guest performances in the German-speaking area, performances of Verdi’s ‘Otello’ with Placido Domingo in Italy’s Reggio Emilia in 1992, an invitation to the Vienna Festival in 1995 with the performance of the opera ‘Der ewige Friede’ by Kurt Schwertsik, as well as the participation at the Festical de musica in Gran Canaria in 1996 with Weber’s ‘Der Freischütz’ and ‘Fidelio’ by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven’s work as a concert choir, the Bonn opera choir has since its founding participated in several performances of the 9th symphony, lastly at the Beethovenfest Bonn 2005 on the Bonn Museumsplatz conducted by the general music director at the time, Roman Kofman. During the Beethovenfest Bonn 2009, the opera choir contributed to the performance of Gustav Mahler’s 8th symphony (Symphony of a Thousand) conducted by Stefan Blunier.

The choir’s vocal quality documents the complete recording of the opera ‘Il Guarany’ by Antonio Carlos Gomes with Placido Domingo. Also recorded on CD are ‘Der Golem’ by Eugen d’Albert and Frank Schreker’s ‘Irrelohe’ with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn conducted by Stefan Blunier.
