Chor der Bayreuther Festspiele

A specific composed festival orchestra initially came together at the instance of Richard Wagner in 1872 for the performance of Beethoven’s 9th symphony in celebration of the laying of the first stone for the Festival Theater and in 1876 for the first Bayreuth Festival. Since 1886 and to this day the festival orchestra exists, which consists of the best musicians from other orchestras. Approximately 200 musicians from renowned national and international orchestras come together each year specifically for the Bayreuth Festival.

Today, the festival choir is composed of roundabout 150 members, which exclusively meet up for the rehearsals and performances in Bayreuth. The majority of singers come from professional choirs of European opera houses and broadcasting companies, others are not bound to an institute, but rather work as a freelance singer. The choir’s lineup changes every year, but a big fixed group of members exists, which in part has contributed to the festival for several years. The choir has received several honors, such as the Orphée d’Or and the Opera Award 2014.
