Ari Benjamin Meyers

Ari Benjamin Meyers, born 1972 in the USA, lives and works in Berlin. Meyers received his training as a composer and conductor at The Juilliard School, Yale University, and Peabody Institute. Trading the concert format for that of the exhibition, his works as an artist – such as ‘Kunsthalle for Music’ (2018), ‘Symphony 80’ (with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) and ‘Solo for Ayumi’ (both 2017) – explore structures and processes that redefine the performative, social, and ephemeral nature of music as well as the relationship between performer and audience. His conceptual projects and installations often draw attention to concrete details of music making otherwise taken for granted and make tangible underlying conceptual operations. Recent works have addressed music scores themselves, forms and arrangements of musical instruments and ensembles, concert settings, and gestures of performers and conductors. At the same time, his compositions and performances seek to challenge the relationship between performer and audience, giving form to the practice of musicians and composers, and musical structures in the context of visual art.

His diverse output features musical works for film, stage, exhibition and public spaces as well as three operas including a commission for the Semperoper Dresden, a ballet score for the Paris Opera, and two original productions for Schauspielhaus Bochum, ‘Just in Time’, ‘Just in Sequence’ (2014) and ‘Changing of the Guard’ (2018). He has collaborated with artists including Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Anri Sala, and Tino Sehgal and bands such as The Residents, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Chicks on Speed. For the director Ulrich Rasche he developed a number of large-scale stage compositions, among them for ‘Dantons Tod ‘(Schauspiel Frankfurt, 2015), ‘Die Räuber’ (Residenztheater Munich, 2016), and ‘Die Perser’ (Salzburg Festival, 2018). In April 2021 his newest music theater performance, ‘Forecast’, will premiere under his direction at the Volksbühne Berlin.

Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Ari Benjamin Meyers: Kunsthalle for Music’ at MCA Santa Barbara (2019), ‘Tacet’ at Kunstverein Kassel (2019) and ‘In Concert’ at OGR Turin (2019). His works have been shown at institutions internationally. His artist’s book ‘Tacet in Concert’ was recently published by Corraini Edizioni.

‘BAUPROBE BEETHOVEN’ is his second collaboration with Rimini Protokoll.
