We all think we know Beethoven's 'Moonlight' Sonata. Yet not even its name stems from Beethoven: it was invented by the writer Ludwig Rellstab, who felt transported to the nocturnal shores of Lake Lucerne by its C-sharp minor tonality. This Sonata quasi una fantasia seems to float in mid-air in the first movement only to plunge all the more heavily to earth in the finale. Pierre-Laurent Aimard combines it with works by leading 20th-century composers that he knew in person. He studied in Paris with Olivier Messiaen's wife Yvonne Loriod, who ushered him into the spiritual universe of that composer-ornithologist. He was also a founding member of Pierre Boulez's Ensemble Intercontemporain and maintained a decades-long friendship with György Ligeti, who composed many works specially for him. The supervisory board of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation called Aimard a 'key figure in the music of our time' when it awarded him its 'Nobel Prize in Music' in 2017.
