'The world on the moon' (Il mondo della luna) is a comic opera based on a libretto by the witty Carlo Goldoni and set to music by the equally witty Joseph Haydn. It's a delicious bit of tomfoolery, with deeper significance. Two daughters, two lovers and a curmudgeonly old father: how can they win him over? The young gentlemen light on an idea: the father is a passionate stargazer, so with a bagful of tricks they convince him that he has landed on the moon. Gadzooks, everything there is topsy-turvy! In the end the outfoxed father steps aside for the young lovers. Haydn's opera, premièred in Esterházy Palace in 1777, exudes a magical fairy-tale atmosphere that takes on a new shape in this version by the Munich Chamber Opera.
